The Vital Distinction: Why Sparring Is Crucial for Learning and Mastering Boxing
In the world of boxing, the distinction between sparring and an actual match may seem subtle, but it carries immense significance. You see, when we step into the ring for a real bout, our objective is crystal clear – to defeat the opponent in front of us. It’s a fierce battle where victory is the ultimate goal. However, when it comes to sparring, the game changes. Here, the objective takes on a different shade, one that’s all about learning and growth, not just for you but also for your sparring partner.
So, what exactly does sparring entail, and why should you consider it a cornerstone of your training? Let’s learn more about sparring and uncover its importance, shedding light on the difference that defines this vital aspect of boxing training.
Sparring is where you put your practiced skills from shadow boxing, pad work, and bag workouts to the test. Here, you must react to your opponent’s moves, which is quite different from the controlled bag exercises.
It’s in sparring that you truly gauge the effectiveness of your techniques. For instance, you might have a punch-and-movement combination that seems flawless on the bags or mitts. However, it’s only during a sparring session that you’ll discover whether it truly works, and you’ll gain valuable insights into any adjustments needed before giving it another shot.

So, grab your gloves, and let’s explore the foundations of power, stability, and defense that all start with the right stance.
1) Become More Powerful

2) More Stability
In the world of boxing, stability is a crucial factor. A boxer who maintains stability not only has better control over themselves but also dominates the fight with precision.
3) Stronger Defense
No matter which defense technique you employ—whether it’s blocking, slipping, ducking, or creating distance—it all hinges on having a solid stance. Without the right stance, your defensive efforts may fall short. That’s why your stance serves as the fundamental basis for effective defense.
So, whether you’re an orthodox or a southpaw fighter, remember that perfecting your stance is the bedrock of your success in the ring. It’s not just about power, stability, and defense; it’s about investing in yourself and your journey as a boxer. The Art of Feinting: Tactics Behind Distracting Your Boxing Opponents
Hello, fellow boxing enthusiasts,
Today, we’re diving deep into the fascinating world of feinting, a versatile technique employed not only in boxing but also in sports like football, hockey, and handball. Ever wondered why and how feints work their magic in the boxing ring? Think of feinting as the art of ‘faking’ your moves, a tactical maneuver that confounds and distracts your opponents, making them second-guess their every defensive move.
Join us on this journey as we unravel the secrets of feinting in boxing, offering insights that can elevate your game to a whole new level.
In-action: Mastering the art of feinting – feint jab followed by a body shot.
Check out our tutorial video below for easy-to-follow demonstrations of basic feinting techniques using your punches. We’ll also touch on another aspect of feinting: using your footwork to trick your opponent into thinking you’re moving one way while you quickly shift in another direction with your front foot. (We might even make a tutorial video about this soon!)
Feinting can be a valuable strategy, especially when you’re up against someone who focuses a lot on defending themselves. By pretending with your jabs, you can figure out what kind of defense your opponent is planning to use. This knowledge allows you to follow up with the right punches or counter their moves, surprising your opponent in the process. These unexpected punches can lead to a knockout or, at the very least, throw off your opponent’s game plan for a while.
Sparring session: Tactical boxing moves and effective defense.
As mentioned in the title, I believe that Feinting is an often overlooked movement in Boxing, which surprises me considering its immense power. Boxers tend to underutilize this technique, but in my opinion, it truly has a lot to offer. You can see these technique heavily used in professional fights and even in big competitions such as the Sea Games and Olympics.
As you embrace the art of feinting and integrate it into your boxing repertoire, remember that mastery comes with practice. Incorporate feints seamlessly into your sparring sessions and shadow boxing routines, letting them flow naturally. By doing so, you’ll not only surprise your opponents but also gain a deeper understanding of their defenses. These ‘surprise punches’ have the potential to disrupt your opponent’s game plan or even lead to a knockout. So, don’t hesitate to explore the power of feinting in your boxing journey.

The Power of Shadow Boxing: Why It’s Essential in Combat Sports Training
Hey Everyone!
Today, we dive deep into a term that resonates not just in the world of boxing, but also in kickboxing, MMA, and Muay Thai – Shadow Boxing. It’s a phrase echoed in gyms worldwide, and if you’ve trained at KOS, you know I never skip a session without it.
But what’s the big deal, you ask? Why dedicate time to shadow boxing when there are modern equipment, coaches, and various drills at your disposal? Some might roll their eyes at the mere mention of it, but trust me, this post will shed light on the incredible power concealed within Shadow Boxing. So, join me on this journey as we unravel its secrets and unlock your full potential!
Dedicated students honing their shadow boxing skills with precision.
1) Perfect Exercise to help you warm up or cool-down
Shadow Boxing is an effective warm-up exercise that offers benefits not only to the body but also to the mind. It allows individuals to apply and reinforce previously learned techniques, while also promoting movement and engaging in punches that mirror the actual sport. As a warm-up option, it stands out from mere running routines.
In addition, shadow boxing can also serve as a cooling-down activity. This time, it provides a more relaxed experience for both muscles and the mind. Rather than executing fast-paced, forceful punches, it can be approached as a way to refresh and refine one’s skills. By practicing and executing movements at a slower pace, individuals can focus on specific details or nuances they encountered during the training session.

2) Improves Flow
One common issue many beginners face, let it be bag drills or sparring, stopping with one or two punches. Put simply, there seems to be a lack of flow in the different actions. The reason is, that there is no muscle memory of connecting a flow of punches. To overcome this, simply engage in shadow boxing, since there are no obstacles in the way of your punch, you can add in a few more punches to make it flow smoothly.
3) Creates Visualization
Similar to chess, in boxing, you improve when you visualize ahead. Visualizing ahead allows you to plan on what you should and what you shouldn’t be doing. Shadow boxing forces you to think of possible scenarios, which leads to correct follow-ups.
You can also try to adapt to new fighting styles with your Shadow Boxing Drills. For instance, you know that your opponent is a southpaw, therefore, there will be a few adaptations to take note such as where you move, what punches to throw, and even the entire game plan. Add those changes and practice it during your Shadow Boxing.
Intensive shadow boxing sessions: We push our limits to reach new heights.
4) Enhance Movements
Everyone learns how to throw a Jab, however, it is through continuous practice that one can refine and strengthen their technique. Shadow boxing exercises not only improve overall movement but also assists in refining crucial aspects such as head movement, punch execution, and footwork. While you are shadow boxing, you’ll know what works for you and what doesn’t. Focus on what works for you and make that your strength. In short, Shadow Boxing is a great technique developer!
5) Lifetime Exercise
As time goes on, there could be some reasons that may make you want to hold back from punching the bag because it can be a bit hard on your body. Age might stop you from participating in sparring, but you can always keep doing Shadow Boxing no matter how old you are. It won’t hurt you or cause any injuries if you do it correctly. Plus, it’s a great way to get some cardio in!

At King of Strength Boxing Gym, Shadow Boxing is more than just a warm-up; it’s a cornerstone of our training philosophy. It’s a ritual embedded in our training plan that shapes not only our fighters but also our community. Our competitive boxers swear by it, using it to mentally prepare for their fights. The shadow boxing experience allows them to visualize the venue, the energy of the crowd, the ring, and even their opponent, fostering a unique confidence before stepping into the real fight.

Achieving Boxing Mastery: Essential Equipment and Training Regimens for 10 Days
In the fast-paced world we live in, time is a precious commodity, and we’re all racing against the clock. With everything just a click away, it’s tempting to seek quick fixes and shortcuts in our pursuits.
However, some endeavors, like mastering the art of boxing, demand more than just a shortcut. They require time, passion, and unwavering dedication. Just like any other skill or art form, boxing demands constant practice, relentless perseverance, and yes, time. It’s an Anaerobic Sport that thrives on exceptional intensity and unwavering focus during training. Yet, one of the biggest challenges we face on our journey to boxing excellence is the limited time we can spend in the gym.
As humans, we naturally crave rapid progress, but it’s crucial to understand that learning and mastering are two entirely distinct endeavors. Along the way, you’ll encounter challenges and mental blocks, but remember, there are no shortcuts to real training success. So, let’s explore the key elements that can help you optimize your boxing journey.

Which Boxing Equipment do you need?
To kickstart your 10-day boxing journey, having the right equipment is essential. Here’s the list to enhance your performance and make the most of your training.
Boxing Gloves
One of the must-have items in your training gear collection is a set of training gloves. These gloves are fantastic for all kinds of training activities like bag work, mitt work, and even live sparring sessions. Training gloves come in various sizes, typically ranging from 10oz to 16oz.
Weight

80 kgs or heavier
16 oz
67 kgs – 80 kgs
14 oz
67 kgs or lighter
12 oz
Children (6-12 years)

Hand Wraps
Hand wraps are important especially when it comes to safety. They’re essential for anyone who trains in boxing or martial arts. These handy wraps are designed to protect your wrists from sprains and, even worse, breaks when you throw a powerful punch. Not only that, but they also keep the skin on your knuckles from getting torn up when you’re going hard on those heavy bags.
Head Gear
Consider investing in a decent sparring headgear. The padded helmet is essential for boxers who indulge in live sparring. The headgear will effectively protect against cuts, swelling, and bruises.
Mouth Guard
Get yourself a mouth guard once you start your boxing journey. It comes in handy during sparring and drills. The mouth guard is used to prevent or decrease the chances of injury to the teeth, arches, lips, and gums.
Footwear
Boxing shoes are lightweight and have a nice, soft sole design that lets you move around quickly. They’re perfect for keeping your feet dry since sweat dries up in no time. Plus, they offer great traction for your training surface.
Training solo at home
And, if you will be training at home, make sure to add these to your list.
Punching Mittens
Boxing Body Protector
Heavy Bag
Establishing effective routines to condition your body is essential for your boxing journey. Consider incorporating self-help YouTube videos into your training arsenal. But remember, balance is key.
Don’t push your body to its limits every day. Instead, maintain a mindful approach by monitoring the intensity, frequency, and volume of your workouts. Discover what suits you best, and alternate between intense training days and lighter ones. Pay close attention to your movements as you punch and move, constantly refining your technique. This approach ensures steady progress in your boxing journey.

Maximizing Success Through Technique: The Key to Skill Mastery in Sports and Beyond
Welcome back, everyone!
Have you ever pondered the legendary wisdom of Bruce Lee and his famous quote, ‘I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times’? It’s a saying that’s etched in my memory and guided me through countless training sessions.
Bruce Lee’s timeless wisdom sets the tone for our sports journey.
If you’ve ever wondered when you’ll move on to the next big thing in your training, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too, questioning my coach silently. But here’s the secret that coaches across all sports will tell you: ‘Master what you’ve learned first.’ In this article, we’re diving deep into the essential world of correct technique, a fundamental key to your sports journey’s success. Let’s unlock the secrets together!
Coach Karthick leading the way for our aspiring young champions.
Similar to everyone, my first boxing training was about footwork. My Coach, T Balasundram from U2Can Boxing Gym, taught me the right stance in boxing and explained how important footwork is in boxing. After correcting me, he put me in front of a mirror to practice my movements.
Coach Kumar and our talented boxer working on defensive skills.
The same drill went on for WEEKS (Almost 2 months if I remember correctly)! I had to report to training, warm up, circuit program, and then practice my movements in front of the mirror. Back then, being a 13-year-old teenager, I was frustrated. I am in boxing, but have not learned my punches yet, I even had a thought to stop attending the training. That’s when my coach came and told me my footwork had improved and taught me my first few punches.
Throughout my boxing journey, I’ve been confident & proud of my footwork. Thanks to my coach and those ‘boring’ sessions in front of the mirror. When I was practicing, I didn’t realize the power of it, but it was a ‘Muscle-Memory’ training that helped me till now. I’ve stopped training for about 5 years, but whatever I’ve learned and trained is stored in my ‘Muscle Memory’. That’s the importance of correct technique!
Building a strong foundation in our young athletes with expert coaching.
In the end, my journey has shown me that mastering the fundamentals, just like Bruce Lee’s wisdom suggests, is the true path to excellence in any sport. So, when you repeat the same drill repeatedly, embrace it as your secret weapon for success.
Remember, practice truly does make perfect. If you’re ready to take your training to the next level and explore the world of correct technique, check out our Schedule + Rates page. Let’s make your sports journey extraordinary!

Discovering the Power of Breaks: How a Trip to Sydney Helped Me to Recharge in Life and Sports
Hi everyone,
It’s been a while since we caught up, and I’ve got some exciting stories to share. Just returned from a rejuvenating 10-day getaway in Sydney, a trip that was a blend of learning and leisure.
(Will be sharing the photos from the trip here!)
Taking a moment to unwind and appreciate the view
But you know what struck me most during this journey? The immense importance of taking a breather, not only from our hectic daily lives but also in the realm of sports. So, let’s talk more about why breaks matter, how they can fuel your passion, and why I’m convinced you’ll want to hear more about it.
In the hustle and bustle of Singaporean life, we all find ourselves ensnared in the routine grind. Balancing work, responsibilities, social commitments, and countless other tasks can be an overwhelming juggling act.
This ‘juggling’ process could lead to frustrations at some point of time. That ‘frustration’ would lead to breakdown and obviously affect the quality of life. But how is this related to fitness or boxing?
Learning and training with fellow boxers in Sydney
Not only boxing, but all sports out there have this term called burn off phase. Have you seen someone who used to be so good at a particular sport and then perform badly for the event? Have you seen a student studying so hard for a particular exam but not performing during the test? The most common one, have you seen someone been so determined to be starting a fitness regime, posting out what they have trained, what they have for their diet but then stopping everything in a couple of weeks?
That’s called BURN-OUT.
Pedal your way to greatness surrounded by inspiring fighter artwork.
Why does this Burnout take place?
1) Pushing yourself for a prolonged period
For example, when someone is preparing for their upcoming boxing competition. The back-to-back training could be intense. Due to other commitments, they might not get proper rest. When this continues for a long period, some tend to lose motivation for training. They are looking forward to finishing the training & competition rather than doing well.
2) OVER-Pushing yourself suddenly
Another example is someone who wants to lose weight. They wake up one day and change their entire lifestyle, working out twice daily, having strict meals, counting calories, etc. This is too shocking for the mind. Rather than a goal, it becomes a torture. Eventually, he/she starts to crave unhealthy food and starts cheating on the routine.
Every fight tells a story of determination and grit
So what should I do?
The answer is in the title of this blog: TAKE A BREAK!
Let’s say you have been so strict with your workout regime for the past 5 weeks & have lost 5kg. Take a day off, and have a “CHEAT MEAL”. Something that has been in your mind, something that you have been craving for. This would give you some kind of happiness, satisfaction & of course GUILT. Haha! But it’s really fine, you DESERVE it. It’s just like giving yourself a reward for sticking to the plan. That “Cheat Meal” motivates you to push for another 5 weeks!
Fun Fact: I ate a bowl of Prawn noodles after sticking to a plan for a couple of weeks, and I still remember how happy I felt when I was having that meal.
For those of you guys who have been training for a long period. I advise my competitive boxers to take a complete 1/2 weeks off to give the body & the mind the time to recover completely. Also, when they are back, I ensure I start from a low to moderate intensity rather than continuing from where they left off.
I trust this article has shed light on the importance of rejuvenating breaks and how they can rekindle your motivation. Remember, a well-deserved break doesn’t have to be lengthy – it’s about quality, not quantity. So, take that short breather and let it propel you towards greater heights, both in your sporting journey and in life. If you’re eager to dive into our schedules and rates for a tailored experience, head over to our Schedule + Rates page to explore what we offer. Here’s to your success, both on and off the field!
Unlocking Boxing: Discover the Answers to Your Questions!
Hi everyone,
Do you have questions about boxing training? We’ve got answers to open your eyes. Dive in, and drop us a message if we missed your questions!
1) BOXING? Will I get punched in the face?
NOOO! There’s a lot more to boxing than just punching each other’s faces. Please do understand – boxing is an art form. You’ll have to go through and learn many things before stepping into a sparring session. We understand that some of you are not interested in competing, so our coaches will definitely not throw you into the ring to get punched. Please understand that Boxing can be a fitness tool to achieve your goals.
Boxing Sparring: Skill Development and Protective Gear in Action
2) Will I be able to lose weight through Boxing?
There’s no way you’ll not lose weight during an intense boxing regime. In order to lose weight, apart from dieting, CARDIO IS A MUST! For those engaged in boxing, it becomes evident that it offers an excellent cardio workout. It keeps your mind so engaged that you’ll hardly notice the time passing by – perfect for those who find running a bit dull!
Additional tip: Those who have trained at KOS definitely know that you’ll be perspiring so much due to our COOLING GYM! LOL
3) How often should I train?
It’s like the child asking their parent, ‘How much should I study?’. The answer is, THE MORE THE BETTER. It depends on your goal and whether you have a time frame to achieve it. For beginner boxers, I recommend at least twice a week. For competitive boxers, at least 3-4 times a week.
A Well-Trained King of Strength Boxer
4) Since it’s Western boxing, there won’t be any leg training, right?
One of the most frequently asked questions! I wish you could see the extensive leg workouts we incorporate during our Strength & Conditioning Training! Guys, we don’t use our legs for kicking only. However, we need our legs to be as strong as our upper body. We use our legs for proper footwork, to duck, to move away from our opponent & most importantly, we use the strength of the lower body to transfer the power to the punch. That explains why Boxers do rounds after rounds of skipping!
Tip: Want better punch power? TRAIN YOUR LEGS!

5) I’m afraid if my kid learns boxing, he/she will punch someone outside.
We instill discipline in them before even learning the first punch of boxing. At KOS, we believe if discipline is there, learning becomes smoother. As mentioned above, boxing is a beautiful art form, often confused with violence. We want to emphasize that Boxing helps to control your anger management and disciplinary issues, and it’s a great way to relieve stress! You can call us to enquire more about our boxing classes for kids in Singapore.

6) Girls can do Boxing?
To be honest, girls make great boxers! They have something that almost all guys lack. GRACEFULNESS! Girls who do boxing, remember not to lose that part of you. That makes boxing more of an art.
Fun Fact: For those who trained at KOS, Our Female Boxer Kay was the sparring partner for all our male competitive boxers and she gave them a tough time in the ring!

7) Does Weight Training slow me down?
Weight training definitely is important for boxing. Even our competitive boxers go through a weight training phase as a part of the training plan. Weight training generates explosive power and helps to improve muscle endurance. But here’s the catch: When boxers shift their focus excessively toward aesthetics and adopt a bodybuilding-oriented approach, that’s where things can get tricky. It’s not that pursuing a bodybuilding-style workout is wrong; it’s just crucial to pay attention to your form and avoid potential injuries
Tip: Please cool down & stretch after your weight training to prevent tightness.
Two Boxers Engaged in Weight Training for Muscle Endurance
8) How long do I have to learn Boxing to master it?
Boxing is an ongoing adventure; there’s no need to anticipate the finish line. Instead, relish the continuous learning process. Set small goals to stay motivated and eager for further growth
Tip: Record your Pad work/Sparring videos to compare and understand how much you have improved or how much you have to improve.
