Thinking of taking up boxing? Boxing is a great martial art due to how accessible and straightforward it is. Unlike other martial arts, all you need to do is focus on punches and movement.
The art form is simple to learn, but complex to master—making it one of the most compelling combat sports in the world. With consistent training, most beginners can grasp the fundamentals in six months or less! This makes it perfect for fitness, self-defence, or even mental development.
So what actually happens during beginner boxing classes?

It’s your first boxing class, don’t worry—you won’t be thrown into sparring! A qualified boxing coach or boxing trainer will usually begin by introducing the boxing fundamentals. This includes:
There are also two different stances in boxing: orthodox (left leg forward) and southpaw (right leg forward).
These are the foundation of every good boxer. Learning how to move properly is just as important as learning how to punch. Once you’ve got these basics down, you’ll start practising the four fundamental punches:
To tie everything together, coaches will incorporate shadow boxing to determine how well you’ve grasped the fundamentals. This is where you practise all your moves without a partner or equipment.
Coaches will likely incorporate some focus mitt training, heavy bag training, or even speed bag training too.

One of the reasons boxing is so beginner-friendly is that you don’t need much equipment to get started. Most boxing classes for beginners provide shared boxing gloves for trial sessions. However, you must bring your own pair for subsequent classes.
You’ll also need hand wraps to protect your wrists and knuckles during training. Most gyms in Singapore sell standard gloves and hand wraps for beginners. Since most beginners won’t have boxing shoes either, a pair of trainers or court shoes will be more than sufficient.
For hygiene purposes, some gyms have a no-shoe policy, especially if they offer kickboxing and MMA classes. For clothes, choose lightweight, sweat-wicking gear that allow you to move freely.

While boxing is great for self-defence, it is also one of the most effective full body workouts. Every class typically begins with warm-up exercises such as jogging, stretching, or jump rope to increase your heart rate.
Throughout the session, you’ll perform high-intensity movements that improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance. Many beginner classes also incorporate elements of strength training and HIIT workouts so you burn calories while building lean muscle.
Here’s a breakdown of how most gyms structure their sessions:
Ultimately, boxing classes for beginners are not designed to break you on your first day. Coaches understand that everyone starts at a different level, so the intensity will be tailored to your experience.

Most beginners become comfortable with the basics within three to six months. People with athletic backgrounds might find it easier to learn, settling within three months or less.
During this period, you’ll build confidence with your stance, footwork, defensive movements, and punching technique while gradually improving your conditioning. As your fitness improves, you’ll find yourself moving faster and reacting quicker.
You also start performing longer combinations with better control. The key is consistency. Training two or three times each week allows you to develop good habits while steadily progressing through your boxing programme without feeling overwhelmed.

To start your first training session confidently, you could watch some beginner boxing videos to get a better understanding of the fundamentals. This should make it easier when it comes to learning from a coach up close and personal.
You could also arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier to familiarise yourself with the gym and the coach. This gives you enough time to wrap your hands properly and ask questions. Be sure to wear comfortable workout clothes and don’t forget to bring a water bottle and a small towel.
Most importantly, come with an open mind and be prepared to learn. Don’t worry if you struggle with the techniques at first because every experienced boxer was a beginner too.
